Re: [-empyre-] Re: Galleries, publics, net.art

i would like to pick up on something helen mentioned in a recent post:

i work in a collective art/curatorial practise called low-fi. we produce a
database of current net art activity with monthly selected [vaguely
threaded] lists of projects. our focus is on distribution and in attempting
to present net art to an audience beyond the net art community. we are
participating in a residency at the ica in london specifically so that we
are located within a visual arts institution. there are a couple of reasons
for this: our activity is contextualised/informed, at least in part, by the
broader art context; we can potentially extend our audience to ica visitors
who may not be net savvy.

i think that one of the key difficulties in net art finding a broader
audience is creating some online bridges between the net art community and
visual art world [this is one target audience there are obviously others]
who don't know where to start looking online. online/offline bridges. at
least if net art is given a gallery presence, even if it doesn't translate
well in terms of a viewing experience, it draws attention to a medium and
area of practice which is still well hidden. it is a way of
publicising/distributing urls.

it would be helpful if institutional sites linked to resources for locating
net art [as valerie mentioned: Turbulence and Rhizome; and also on a smaller
scale our own project low-fi locator] alongside the usual information on
opening times and the trophy commissioned net art projects which adorn some
of the british art institutional sites. there are obviously some exeptions
to this rule eg. gallery 9, artport, dia, iniva, where the balance between
gallery site and net art representation is more interesting and for viewers
a more useful gateway to net art.
